One of the many YouTubers that I follow; emilynoel83, recently posted up a tag video titled ‘YouTube made me buy it.’ Like her, I too watch a lot of beauty related videos on YouTube and have been doing so for the past 5-6 years or so. A lot of the beauty items I own have been purchased because I’ve seen it or heard about it on YouTube. If it weren’t for YouTube, I think my bank account would be a lot healthier… but hey, we all need to do our part to boost the economy :p
Anyway here is my list of the things YouTube made me buy and the YouTubers that are responsible for it:
- Wet N wild 8 eyeshadow palette in ‘Comfort Zone’
Emily is one of the first YouTubers I remember to rave about Wet N Wild products and she was the one who made me try out this brand. This particular palette I own is great; it’s inexpensive (I think I paid around $5-6 USD) and the quality is amazing! The shadows are highly pigmented and buttery smooth. The bottom right colour is also very unique; it looks brown but when it catches the light it turns blue/green (photos below). Sadly I only own this one product from this brand, which I grabbed while I was on holiday in the US.
- Revlon products
I’ve always thought that Revlon was a brand for older, mature ladies (since my mum and aunties use it). Emily shed a different light on this brand for me, I enjoy her recommendation on the ColorStay retractable eyeliner and the Super Lustrous lipglosses. (I don’t have photos for this as I’m still waiting for my belongings to be shipped here from Australia.)
- Coastal Scents 26 Color Shadow Blush Combo Palette
After watching a tutorial she did using this palette, I wanted to get this palette so bad! (Watch tutorial here). It also made me try out some other Coastal Scents products. (Please excuse my dirty palette, the outside cover has been through a lot :p)
- Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill mascara
This mascara is amazing, it builds up volume and lengthens my sad sad lashes without flaking. Tiffany however has the most amazing eyelashes I have ever seen, I’m pretty sure she can make any mascara work.
- Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circles Eraser
As the name suggests, this product is to be used under your eyes to ‘erase’ your dark circles. I however, prefer to use it to conceal redness around my nose or other blemishes. I think it’s because the one I got is slightly too light for me so it looks strange when I use it to cover the dark circles under my eyes. Other than that it’s a pretty good product and I like the applicator.

- Tarte Amazonian clay 12-hour blush in ‘Exposed’
I think Jen raved about this blush in so many of her videos which made me ever so curious! It is also the first thing I have ever tried from Tarte and I’m impressed. The colour pay-off is really nice and I consider this blush as my ‘safe’ blush. Meaning I don’t have to think too much or be cautious when applying it. I also find you can use it as a contour under your cheekbones or blush on the apples of the cheeks. I would describe the colour as a neutral nude with a hint of plum.
- Revlon Lip Butter
Everyone on YouTube went mad for these at one point or another but it was only after I watched Jen’s video I was convinced I needed them in my life. To me the lip butter is like the love child of a lipstick and a lipbalm. It’s moisturising with a nice colour pay-off. The ones in the photo are ‘Peach Parfait’ and ‘Candy Apple.

- Canmake Cheek & Cheek blush
This blush made it to Ingrid’s favourites video and even though I’m not 100% sure I got the same colour as hers (mine is number 01) I still really like this blush. It has a cool pink blush on one side and a coral orange blush on the other, pretty to wear separately or mixed. It also has a nice scent (not that you can smell it when you wear it). I think I especially like it because this blush reminds me of my honeymoon (which is when I got it).
5. YouTube in general
- Urban Decay Naked palette
Cult favourite on YouTube. While I was in the US in 2010 every Sephora I went to did not have stock of this palette. Overall a great neutral palette, smooth shadows and great pigmentation. The colours ‘half baked’ and ‘smog’ are amazing, they apply more like loose pigments. (Please ignore the watch mark on my wrist in the swatch photo lol)
- Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo
Not sure who would need to wear cream eyeshadow for 24 hours, but that’s how long they claim this will last. I personally have not tested this claim but for the 6-8 hours I’ve worn it, it stayed on pretty well on its own. Colours featured starting from the top to bottom right then left are: ‘Tough as Taupe,’ “Bad to the Bronze’ and ‘Bold Gold.’ In the photo ‘Tough as Taupe’ is coming up a lot more grey, in person it has more of a brown/plummy tone.
- Shu Uemura eyelash curler
Again this is another cult favourite in YouTube land and in the beauty community in general. It supposedly fits the shape of Asian eyes better than other eyelash curlers. To be honest I’m not sure if this is true because I have used this eyelash curler for the longest time that I don’t remember how my previous ones performed. I do like this one though, it does its job well.
That’s my list!
xx
